Remember that simple little song from childhood?
Jesus loves me this I know, for the Bible tells me so.....
Such simple profound truth wrapped up in such a simple childs hymn!
Jesus does love me and I am counting on Jesus to manifest his love and life in me now and until I stand before God when I depart this life.
I am sure some of my blog readers have viewed my blog because of the title "One Gay Christian", and that title has produced a varied reaction in each viewer. Some of you have become upset, others have a spark of hope and some of you are just amused.
The readers who became upset are usually of the ilk that support our present "culture wars", those are the people who in the name of God seek to disenfranchise Gay and Lesbian Americans from full participation in American life. They vilify gay folks with a variety of stereotypes whipping up a frenzy of fear in the heterosexual community about how we have an "agenda" to destroy our culutre and thumb our nose at God while we live a libertine lifestyle.
The readers who have a spark of hope are usually those gay/lesbian Christians who truly know Jesus as their Lord and Saviour and seek to please him everyday with a committed life of love and relationship with God. The only hitch is they just "happen to be gay". As a group these fine folk tend to me monogamous and except for thier orientation they are no different the rest of America....except they are gay......
They have a spark of hope because the one thing that they should be able to expect from the church is the unconditional love of Jesus that should be Christianitys trademark.... But for the Gay Christian it is not available.
The readers who are amused are usually the non believers who already think that Christianity is a joke and delight in the times when Christians kill thier own wounded. These people are usually seeking to find something to ridicule the church about and many Christians keep them well stocked with ammunition. The supposed "culture wars" that the Christian right are engaging in to "save America" fly right in the face of Gods command to love one another and make disciples of that love. This behaviour just gives more reasons to put the church to an open shame in society.
So what does all this have to do with "Jesus Loves me This I know" and being a gay Christian? I am glad you asked!
My blog speaks to all three groups..... but mainly to group 2.
I want to let all my Christians gay brothers and sisters know that there is a place for you in the family of God. I want to share with you my journey as a "gay Christian". I want you to know that God has a plan for your life, he loves you, he made you Gay and doesnt hate you for it. He wants you to have an abundant life!
As far as the other groups, this is all I am going to say...
Group 1 I love you in spite of your hate and injury to me and a million other gay/lesbian believers. I forgive you! I will pray for you, but, I will not argue with you. To much time has been wasted on your culture wars, Jesus gave us a command to go into all the world and make disciples, showing them the love and mercy of God. My mission field is the disenfranchised gay/lesbians who need to know God's love and be healed from your injuries.
Group 3 I want to apologize profoundly to you for they way my Christian brothers and sisters of group 1 have acted. I want you to know that this is not approved by God. Please forgive us for doing you a disservice by not living out God's true love and mercy before you. I promise to do better. I cant promise that group 1 will change but by the grace and mercy of God I will endeavor to show you what a Christian is supposed to act like.
A brief note, all flames and hate speech will be cheerfully deleted and the author will go on my prayer list.
